Dental sealants are an easy way to add a layer of protection to your child's teeth. Dr. Kenneth Krause and Dr. Katie Krause can be your Westfield, IN dental sealant experts.

What are dental sealants?

Imagine a raincoat for your teeth. This is the analogy used by the American Dental Association (ADA). Dental sealants are a thin layer that your dentist in Westfield puts over your natural teeth to add protection against food particles and natural mouth bacteria. The sealant behaves like a raincoat, preventing decay from getting to your tooth - just like a raincoat protects your skin from rain.

Sealants are ADA recommended as a safe, effective way to block tooth decay in both children and adults. Sealants are applied to the molars in the back of the mouth to prevent cavities from forming.

How are sealants applied?

The application of dental sealants is quick and simple - no numbing is required. Your dentist will clean and dry the teeth to be sealed, then apply a solution that allows the sealant to bond to the tooth. After the solution as settled, the dentist paints the sealant directly onto to the tooth to make the surface smoother and more repellent to bacteria and food particles. Then a UV light tool is used to dry the sealants, and the process is complete.

Benefits of dental sealants

It is still imperative to adhere to the ADA's recommended oral hygiene guidelines of brushing twice a day and flossing once per day. Dental sealants offer a reliable extra layer of protection against tooth decay. This means that if you follow those brushing and flossing recommendations for a healthy mouth, any cavities your child may have gotten will be prevented or at least delayed.
